SUNDAY DROP

Don’t stand in no man’s land.

There's one spot on a padel court where you can't volley, can't defend, and can't reset. Most new players stand there for an entire match.

The dead zone.

The most common positioning mistake in padel: parking yourself just in front of the service line. Not committed to the net. Not back in defense. Stuck in the in-between.

There's a name for that strip: no man's land. And there's a reason pros leave it the second they end up there.

Most new players drift in from two directions: pushing up too fast from the back, or getting bumped back from the net by a lob. Either way, they freeze. They wait. They get punished.

Here's the why:

  • Too far back for the net game. Volleys dip at your feet before you can step in with weight forward.

  • Too far forward to defend. A ball off the back glass arrives before you can turn and set your feet.

The fix is simple. Take two or three steps back, behind the service line, and center yourself between the back glass and the line. That's defense. Now you've got time. Now the ball comes off the glass at hip height. Now you can choose your shot instead of reacting to it.

Passing through is fine. Accelerating through is fine. Standing there is how you donate points.

Against high-intermediate opponents or better, they'll capitalize on it every single time.

What we're watching: Premier Padel Italy Major, semifinal.

The big one of the Italian summer. Premier Padel's Italy Major has narrowed down to the semis, and the matchups are stacked.

Why it's worth your Sunday: this is the highest level of padel you can stream right now.

Watch how often the players don't panic when the ball flies past them. They reset behind the line. They reclaim the position. Live proof of why standing in that trap costs you points.

A court worth knowing in Brooklyn.

Padel Haus Greenpoint at 12 Berry Street, North Brooklyn, walking distance from the East River. Part of Padel Haus's growing NYC presence, the Greenpoint location is indoor, a solid pick for the city's winter months when outdoor play isn't an option. Booking runs through the Padel Haus app, which keeps friction low: pick your time, lock the court, show up.

Each Sunday we feature one US court worth knowing. This week: Brooklyn. Got a home court we should profile? Reply and tell us.

See you next next Sunday,
